Introduction:
Quinoline is an aromatic compound that is flammable when exposed to fire and heat. Reacts with oxidants. The toxic nitrogen oxide fumes are liberated by heat. Combustion produces decomposition products such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides.
Quinoline is weakly alkaline (20 ° C pΚa 4.85). It is soluble in acid to form a salt, and its picrate has a melting point of 203~204 °C. It can react with an alkyl halide to form a quaternary ammonium salt. 1,2-dihydroquinoline and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline can be produced depending on the reaction conditions during the reduction. Upon oxidation, pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid is formed, and then CO2 is removed to become nicotinic acid. When quinoline is nitrated in concentrated sulfuric acid, the 3 and 5 positions are substituted. 3-Nitroquinoline can be obtained by nitration in acetic acid. The halogenation reaction is usually substituted at the 3-position, but when halogenated in concentrated sulfuric acid, substitution can occur at the 5-position and the 8-position.
Application:
Quinoline can be used to produce a tonic, can also be used as acid, solvent, preservative, etc .In pharmaceutical industry, it can be used for the production of nicotinic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline drugs, in printing and dyeing industry for the preparation of cyanine blue pigment and photosensitive pigment, in rubber industry for system accelerators, in agriculture for the production of 8-hydroxyquinoline copper and other pesticides.
