Preparation
(1) Using acrolein, diethyl oxaloacetate and ammonium chloride as raw materials, under the presence of catalyst in ethanol, the reaction is heated under reflux, and the pyridine-2,3 dicarboxylic acid ester is then hydrolyzed to obtain a product after cooling.
(2) Oxidized with nitric acid with quinoline

Application:
Quinolinic acid is an important intermediate in pesticides, medicines and pressure sensitive pigments. It can be used to synthesize imidazolinone herbicides containing pyridine or quinoline rings.
