Indole (CAS NO 120-72-9)

Introduction:
Indole was discovered in coal tar by Weissgerber in 1910, also known as azaindene or benzopyrrole. Indole is a white scaly crystal with a boiling point of 253°C, a melting point of 53°C, a relative density of 1.22, and a heat of combustion of 36500kJ/kg. Indole is soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol, ether and benzene, as well as hot water. Indole gradually darkens and resinizes when exposed to air, and decomposes when heated to boiling point. Indole has a fecal smell, but extremely diluted indole has a floral fragrance.
